About Me

Science. Story. Cinema. Let’s make it memorable.

My Story
I’m Zach MacMillan, a marine ecologist and award-winning filmmaker specializing in science communication. My passion for marine science began as a kid, combing the beaches of Caissie Cape, New Brunswick, flipping over rocks in search of worms and crabs. That early curiosity never left me; it evolved into a career in marine science, and later, into a calling to bring the underwater world to the surface through film. I believe storytelling is one of the most powerful tools we have to inspire action, share discoveries, and build a deeper connection with our planet. Today, I work at the intersection of science and cinema, blending research with visual storytelling to make marine knowledge not just informative, but unforgettable.

As a filmmaker and photographer, I create compelling visual stories rooted in fieldwork, ocean exploration, community collaboration, and environmental research. My work combines immersive visuals, accessible science, and emotional storytelling to connect audiences with the natural world from the seafloor to the surface.

I’ve collaborated with CBC/Radio-Canada, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, academic institutions, and Indigenous partners to bring science to life through both short- and long-form media. Whether embedded on a research icebreaker or shooting on windswept shores, I believe in capturing moments of discovery and making them matter.
